1. Some of the most beautiful rock formations in the United States. Joshua Tree is a great place to rock climb for any level. The rough granite offers good grip, and there are many cracks and holes.
1. Backcountry road driving or mountain biking. The 18-mile Geology Tour Road is one of the more interesting routes. Two hours is required to view all sixteen stops. Four-wheel drive vehicles are recommended.
3. Barker Dam was constructed around 1900 to water cattle and mining. The collected rainwater is used to attract birds and wildlife. A trail leads to the amazing Wonderland of Rocks. There are many Joshua Trees in this area, as well as some cave paintings.
4. Take the Hidden Valley Trail and wind around huge boulders. The area used to be known as a hideout for cattle thieves.
5. Take a drive up to Key’s View, and enjoy the views of the valley. Search for the San Andreas fault.
6. Hike four miles up to Lost Horse Mine, once a famous gold mine.

- It is difficult to survive in the high desert. Bring at least 1 gallon per person, per day.
- Do not use drainage areas after or during thunderstorms.
- You can’t rely on your mobile phone to save you. The coverage is inconsistent.
- Keep away from the mines.
- Snakes can be on the move in spring and summer, so watch where you place your feet & hands.
- Only the first 100 feet are allowed for pets.
- Permits for back country travel are needed. Your vehicle may be towed if you don’t display your permit.
