We decided to go on a day trip together to the Scottish Highlands. My brother was visiting me for the weekend. Friends had recommended Ness Bus for a quality day trip at a reasonable price. You can join many tours in the Scottish Highlands.
What to expect when you tour the Scottish Highlands
We were required to be at 7.20am Saturday morning. I’m happy that I didn’t drink that much scotch on the previous night. I’m glad that my brother didn’t drink as much as me.
We jumped in a small orange bus, which was designed to look like a Highland cow. We had a few more pick-ups, and then we were off! Donald was both our driver and guide. He was funny, lively and had a lot of information about the area even in the early hours.
We were only 24 people, and we all had cool personalities. As we reached our first stop, I had stopped taking notes because it was impossible for me to keep up with Donald’s knowledge about Scotland and Scottish Heritage. I need coffee ….
Scottish Highlands Tour Itinerary
We stopped in Dunkeld a beautiful village where you could walk along River Tay. This is the 7th-longest river in the UK and the longest one in Scotland.
a walk through this stunning scenery is a must. We were all set to leave again after I bought some fresh baked goods and coffee.
The day was becoming exciting! The next stop was Dalwhinnie Distillery. Scotland is home to the best malts. Fact. Fact.
Dalwhinnie is the whisky for ladies. Smooth, sweet and easily drank. I think the best company to enjoy a chocolate fondant is with a friend. We’re off to the bus!
Loch Ness : Let’s find the famous creature that is hiding in this massive loch! We went on a boat trip, which was optional, but obvious. For us.
The boat trip lasts an hour, and it starts at Fort Augustus. This place is perfect for small villages, old homes, little restaurants, and a floodgate.
The Captain was Very Nice. He told us all about the Loch and how you can even see fishes under us on a monitor that looked to me like a surgical monitor. It’s the reason I’m no captain.
The sun was still shining and it lit up the entire loch. It was absolutely beautiful. Monster? You’d have to drink a lot more malt before you can spot the monster. But I did manage to take a funny picture…no, it’s not my selfie!
The bus is back on our way to Glencoe in the Highlands of Scotland. Remember in the last James Bond film, Skyfall when they were at that Scottish manor? This is the area we visited!
Rain begins. Glencoe has a mystery. The glen begins to cry as the rain starts its own road. Glencoe is known for its heavy, heavy rain.
We feel safe inside the bus, but I did run outside at one point to take a photo. The photo. It was worth the effort. I was surrounded by mountains and the rain.
The power that nature has given me. I’ve never felt this strong anywhere else. Glencoe’s the boss. It is powerful. It will tell you whether you are allowed to stay. There is something very mysterious and powerful.
Donald shared with us the mystery and history of Glencoe as we drove back to Edinburgh. As we drove past Stirling, the castle was lit up. Beautiful!
Just before 9pm, we arrived in Edinburgh . I am exhausted and grateful.
Donald, who drove me to the Scottish Highlands and shared with us his amazing knowledge is a man I will always be grateful for. I’m also thankful for tours to the Scottish Highlands… This incredible country has captured my heart forever.
